Rizzoli ‘would consider’ VAR challenge

Refereeing designator Nicola Rizzoli says Serie A would ‘consider’ VAR challenge and claims there are ‘more controversies’ in Italy.

Rizzoli will not be against implementing a challenge rule, similar to the one used in tennis, to football but insists IFAB will have the final say.

“It would be something to consider. It’s not something we are against, but the decision must be made by IFAB,” he told Radio Anch’io Sport.

“In Italy there are many more controversies compared to other countries, it’s a cultural thing. I would have nothing against it [the challenge rule] but we are in a European and world competition.

“At the moment it’s not a topic up for discussion. I don’t know if the controversy would disappear.”

Rizzoli has claimed the referees will continue to only review the ‘clear errors’ and can’t look at every dubious incident.

“Looking at the statistics, the numbers, we understand that since football is not science, the doubts will always remain.

“You would perhaps review too many situations. On the protocol it’s written to review the clear errors and evidence. For this reason, the referee doesn’t always go to review the action.”

But he is sure VAR ‘can be improved’ and claims time will make it better.

“The role of VAR is not yet professional, in a few years they will all be professionals. The referee clearly prefers not to make mistakes, in this case we must apply a protocol which is very restrictive, precisely for the ‘serious and obvious errors’.

“It can be improved; the VAR project is young and will therefore be perfected through mistakes.”
