Walter Zenga wants Cagliari to take another scalp against Milan tomorrow and remains an ‘incurable optimist’ on his possible future in Sardinia.

This might be his final game on the Cagliari bench, having taken over from Rolando Maran during the lockdown.
“I think that we had good performances, when we had the full squad at our disposal, and the regret is that we couldn’t have that situation more often,” said Zenga in his press conference.
“I am an incurable optimist, but the President will make his decision and we’ll see, but I am and feel like the coach of this Cagliari side.”
The winless run was ended by a surprise 2-0 victory over Juventus, who had already won the Scudetto, and 20-year-old Luca Gagliano could get a start against Milan too after scoring on his debut.
“I try to pick the best available line-up against a team that is going through an excellent period of form. I think we’ve given our best with a three-man defence, so that’s what we’ll do tomorrow as well.
“A coach begins every game aiming to win, whether it’s against the leaders or the team propping up the table. I expect the same intensity we saw against Juventus and I want to bring home a positive result.
“All the young players who come up against Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Franck Ribery and others who continue to play at a more advanced age should ask themselves how they managed that. Talent is not enough, you need to be consistent and work hard.
“Ibra is to be admired because he is always professional. If I think back to my days, if someone like Diego Maradona had Ibra’s work ethic, he’d have scored twice as many goals!”
Zenga confirmed Leonardo Pavoletti will be on the bench tomorrow, having been out of action for a year following two devastating knee injuries.
“I’d love to give him a minute on the pitch, but he is absolutely not ready to play yet. We’re just happy he can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but still has work to do post-operation.”
